Mission Zero
Available for just a few short weeks in October every year, the annual release of the Klaro Halloween Cigar Bundle arrives in all of its smoky, sinister glory.
Like in years past, this year's bundle features cigars with spooky, creepy, or costume-oriented themes, with the majority of the blends being of the more opaque variety. However, darker doesn't always mean heavier when it comes to premium cigar blends, with a couple of the smokes in this 6-pack remaining more medium than full.
So, with Halloween just a few weeks away, now is the time to score this seasonal cigar bundle before it disappears back into the shadows forever...
Black Label Trading Co. Last Rites
$72.82
Last Rites by Black Label Trading Co. is a medium-full-bodied cigar that features a dark Ecuadorian Maduro wrapper over a Honduran binder, with a blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers tying it all together. When combined, this forms a profile that is filled with notes of earth, cedar, wood, coffee, and spice, as well as a natural sweetness that lingers on the finish.
For over a decade now, this smoke has been revered as one of Fábrica Oveja Negra's best blends, thanks in part to its packing plenty of intensity while maintaining a smooth, satisfying smoke structure. So while savory, earthy flavors and peppery spice do develop throughout the smoke, the cigar stays far closer to medium than full for much of the time.
Room101 Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro
$63.12
Room101's iconic spaceman has taken a far darker, oilier direction, with the Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro hurtling through space at the speed of smoke. Still produced by AJ Fernandez down in Nicaragua, this full-bodied Nicaraguan puro features an undisclosed maduro wrapper and is known for its bold flavors of earth, espresso, and bittersweet cocoa. These are complemented by layers of roasted tree nuts, spicy peppercorns, and red chili flakes, and a subdued sweetness for added balance.
Here at Klaro, we stock the 6" × 60 gordo vitola, as it provides what we feel is a generous, slow-burning smoking experience, with even thicker layers of smoke and a more earthy, cacao nib-focused core thanks to those additional filler leaves. Potent yet poised, this stick is an excellent choice for maduro smokers looking for a robust Nicaraguan cigar that balances bittersweet and spicy with silky smooth and fruity.
West Tampa Tobacco Company Devil Crab
$57.70
Devil Crab remains one of the most popular figurado premium cigar blends Klaro has ever stocked, and remains one of those "box-worthy smokes" that deserve a permanent place in most humidors. Fruity and festive at times, dark and brooding at others, undeniably rich and oily, and surprisingly metered when it comes to darkness, bitterness, and body, this smoke from West Tampa Tobacco Co. is a devilishly good time. Named after a spicy crab croquette, this stubby perfecto looks the part, with its stout, rounded structure being stuffed with all sorts of mysterious tobacco leaves. While the contents of the blend remain a mystery, we absolutely adore that devilish, meat-packing paper band, and the way it sits atop that oily maduro outer wrapper.
But while it may appear pretty intense, this is far more of a medium-strength cigar, and one that is incredibly composed and clean-burning. Look for flavors of fruitcake studded with walnuts, mulled wine, licorice, roasted chestnuts, and hearty German spelt bread that has been fortified with dark ale. A touch of chocolate milk here, some roasted coconut shavings there, and a hint of coffee bitterness behind them make this quite the impressive Halloween treat.
Black Works Studio Killer Bee Connecticut
$59.90
The Killer Bee Connecticut from Black Works Studio puts a lighter, smoother spin on the brand's popular Killer Bee Maduro blend. Featuring a straw-colored Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper, this cigar delivers creamy notes of cedar, toasted nuts, vanilla, and gentle spice, with just enough pepper to add some character without overpowering the senses.
This forms a flavorful and approachable smoking experience that is more medium-bodied than mild, with an extra layer of spice and complexity to keep things intriguing. So while it may be the lightest-looking premium cigar blend in this year's Halloween Cigar Bundle, this stick is anything but boring or mild, so don't judge this one by its wrapper.
Drew Estate Blackened M81
$92.22
Marketed as "Maduro to the Core," the Blackened M81 by Drew Estate is a cigar that does indeed use 100% maduro leaf and nothing else. Dark, bold, chewy, and powerful, with strong notes of espresso, leather, and dark chocolate, all of the key tasting notes and aromatics that make a quality San Andrés maduro so desirable are there. This results in a smoking experience that starts off lighter and more leisurely, before then gradually growing darker and heavier as the burn line moves southward.
Blended in collaboration with the master blender of Blackened Whiskey and James Hetfield of Metallica fame, this blend's transitions begin with a wrapper that’s grown in the volcanic soil of Mexico’s San Andrés Valley. Beneath that, you will discover a Connecticut Broadleaf binder and a filler mixture of Nicaraguan and Pennsylvania Broadleaf ligero tobaccos. Of particular note is the latter of these filler leaves, the notorious "Green River One Sucker" varietal, which, according to Drew Estate, is the strongest tobacco strain it has ever used.
Asylum 13 Pandemonium
$73.81
Originally launched in 2019 and measuring a whopping 8½″ from cap to foot, the Asylum 13 Pandemonium is one of the longest cigars we have ever stocked. While there are far larger versions of this blend on the market, we find the "small" 52 ring-gauge vitola we stock to be the most balanced. Not just for its clean flavors, but from a time-frame standpoint, a 3-hour smoke session is far more manageable than a 6–8 hour stick.
As for the blend itself, this C.L.E. offshoot is a 100% Nicaraguan puro, with the undisclosed tobacco being utilized primarily coming from the heavily fermented, darker side of the production line. The result is a cigar that is highly revered not just for its balanced strength and fuller body, but for its impressive burn qualities as well. Make no mistake, this is a powerful smoke, but it is also incredibly flavorful, for it comes loaded with notes of espresso, black chocolate, peppercorns, cedar, and sweet citrus.
