German Engineered Cigars Raumzeit
[Buy 5-Pack]
Rocking a Connecticut Shade wrapper from Nicaragua, a filler blend that is part Nicaraguan and part Dominican piloto, and an authentic Indonesian Sumatran binder, Raumzeit by German Engineered Cigars is one incredibly complex smoke.
Translated to English, the name of this cigar means "space travel," and the product page for it capitalizes upon this fact with the following product description:
"Traveling at the speed of light, far beyond the next galaxy, while a friendly android serves cake..."
If that sales pitch doesn't encourage you to fire one of these outstanding sticks up, then maybe the cigar flavor profile of of nuts, honey, cream, white pepper, cloves, nutmeg, and a sprinkling of stardust will. We found this cigar to be so smooth and complex, that we gave it the award for "Klaro Surprise Stogie of the Show" at PCA 2024, and recommend it to anyone in search of an interstellar smoking experience.
Jake Wyatt Appendix II
[Buy 5-Pack]
Standing strong as the best Connecticut Shade cigar reviewed in 2024, the Jake Wyatt Appendix II is a masterpiece in flavor, aromatics, construction, and visual appeal.
Creamy, nutty, and vanilla milk-like in base flavors when retrohaled, sweetness grows the deeper you go, and is joined by those cinnamon and sugar-coated graham cracker flavors we cherish.
Medium-minus in every way, including body and strength, this blend is rich enough to be labeled as "complex" and clean to the point of being considered "pristine." The cigar does get gradually richer as it goes, without getting too funky or charry on you. Instead, it gets a little darker and sweeter, making for a marvelous closure to an already impressive, slow burning 2-hour smoke.
Oscar Valladares Island Jim Connecticut
[Buy 5-Pack]
Constructed to appear all the world like an oversized pencil, the Island Jim Connecticut from Oscar Valladares is as whimsical looking as it gets. It also screams "summer stogie," what with its shaggy foot, and ol' Island Jim himself smoking right along with you on the band, complete with Hawaiian shirt, sunglasses, and beach hat.
And while we have yet to review this blend, we have smoked (and loved) every bit of it, from eraser head all the way down to that #2 tip. A bit of a mystery blend, the only things disclosed are that it has an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper, all Honduran innards, a medium body, and strong tobacco flavors of juicy fruit, butter, and light pepper.
Blackbird Finch Sumatra
[Buy 5-Pack]
Exposing the gentler, more refined side of Sumatran tobacco, comes Finch from Blackbird Cigars. Handmade in Blackbird's brand-new Dominican Republic factory, this blend is concocted from an Indonesian binder and long-filler tobaccos from the USA and the Dominican Republic, all of which are cloaked with a light Sumatra wrapper.
The result is a delightful, slightly milder Sumatran smoking experience, with overtones of milk tea, toast, and green tea bitterness up front. Over time, these tastes gradually become more zestful, without becoming too strong or spicy either. Whole peppercorns, cardamom pods, sweet orange peel, coriander seed, cinnamon sticks, cloves, ginger, star anise... you name the chai tea spice and you're palate will probably pick up on it to some degree or another.
AJ Fernandez New World Dorado
[Buy 5-Pack]
Strong yet ultra-creamy, and somewhat dark and complex, AJ Fernandez's New World Dorado is a cigar filled with compliments and contrasts. There may not be much about it that is mild, but somehow it feels like even fans of lower-power medium cigar blends could stomach this one. This super smooth burner brings bright flavors of caramel, orange peel, almonds, earth, leather, and espresso to each puff. All of theses tastes compliment the darker Nicaraguan puro-powered profiles within perfectly, and together, form a box-pressed brick of pure gold.
Named after AJ Fernandez's "Dorado" farm in Estelí, Nicaragua, which produces almost all of the ingredients for this Nicaraguan puro blend, this stick is a masterpiece in every way. Made up of a Criollo binder and a Cuban-seed wrapper that are both cultivated on this estate, and then loaded with all AJ Fernandez long-fillers, box-pressed, gold-laden glory has never looked so good.
Plasencia Reserva Original
[Buy 5-Pack]
Rated as one of the best medium smokes of all time in our Bucksaw cigar journal, comes the Reserva Original from Plasencia. One of the reasons why we cannot stop recommending this stick, is because it remains the only 100% certified organic cigar on the planet, and also because its creamy body and flavor profiles kick a whole ton of ass.
According Plasencia, this Nicaraguan puro is so pure, that the tobacco used is still grown in a manner akin to that which was used by the Nicarao tribes of that area of the world five hundred years ago. From its flawless combustion, attractive packaging, and approachable price point, to the way in which it tastes and smells of dry and nutty than before, with a toasty cedar note and candied lemon peel, this is one of those summer sticks we can't stop puffing on.
