If you have been following cigar-oriented news as of late, you likely have received word that Kyle Gellis of Warped Cigars fame released a couple of exciting new blends this summer. Both cigars have been a long time in the making, and are in many ways labors of love for the magnificently bearded master blender.
Now, for those of you who haven't been keeping up with the latest in stogie news, below you will find a quick synopsis of the two blends built by Mr. Gellis, along with a little bit of backstory behind both. The latter of which you will find being discussed in the video above, when we caught up with Kyle Gellis at PCA 2024 to get some info on the latest core line launch from Warped.
Saunter by Gellis Family Cigars
[Buy 5-Pack]
Currently only being rolled in robusto form, Saunter features an Ecuador-grown Connecticut Shade wrapper, with an Ecuadorian binder and fillers from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic inside. Together, this heavily-aged tobacco blend produces notes of light-tanned leather, sweet cedar, roasted tree nuts, and baking spice in a medium-bodied mix that is both unique and memorable. In an interview with Cigar Aficionado, Gellis elaborated upon the reasoning behind the name of the cigar:
“Saunter refers to the act of a slow, relaxed manner, without hurry, and that is the reference to the blend. This is a complex, medium-bodied blend with a lot of deep flavors and nuances. It is to be enjoyed as if sauntering.”
Additionally, the name also correlates to the sauntering gate that Gellis' late canine companion exuded, whom you can see pictured upon the band of the cigar.
Warped Isla del Cocodrilo
[Buy 5-Pack]
Isla del Cocodrilo is widely recognized as the nickname for the island of Cuba, for it resembles the profile of a crocodile when viewed on a map. After being deeply inspired by this fact, Warped Cigars' founder, Kyle Gellis, set to creating a blend that he felt would best represent this traditional namesake.
Packed with the best Nicaraguan tobacco primings possible, and then clasped tight by not one, but two binders (Ecuadorian Habano 2000 and Brazilian Arapiraca), this Ecuadorian Habano Deflorada wrapped smoke is as deeply complex as it is clean and crisp. A medium-full blend in regard to body, but with more of a medium build in reference to strength, this cigar is an ideal option for anyone looking for an earthy cigar that is not too heavy, with an even amount of raw sugar cane, cocoa, and vanilla balancing things out.
