Klaro Now Selling "Devil Crab" by West Tampa Tobacco Company

Chef Rick Rodriguez over at West Tampa Tobacco Company has done it again. This time in a peculiar "flying pig" figurado vitola format.

The blend is called the Devil Crab, and when viewed in the right light, the outline of the cigar does resemble the culinary dish to some extent. We won't get into the whole debate over whether it is better to use the spent crab shell or not to hold the appetizer, just know that each box of this cigar comes with Chef Rick's grandma's recipe for the seafood snack.

Now, as for the ingredients that go into this brand-new boutique blend from West Tampa... well that's a chef's secret. In fact, nothing about the tobacco that encapsulates this blend has been disclosed save for the fact that it is made down in Nicaragua and that when rolled into flying pig form it measures 4½″ long with a 60 ring-gauge.

However, having smoked a sample stick that Chef Rick graciously gifted me at PCA for savoring when I got back to Japan, I can offer the following teaser notes from my time with this devilishly delicious fat-ass of a figurado.

🦀Despite its macho appearance, the blend is definitely far more medium than full. This is true for both body and strength, with the taste of the smoke being medium throughout the first half, and then ending on a more medium-full cigar flavor profile mark.

🦀This blend burns slow and low. Physical heat is virtually non-existent up until parting puffs, and the burn rate is consistent, smooth, and creeps along at a crab's pace.

🦀Expect a whole lot of ash. Its stubby size, 60 gauge center barrel line, and impressive build quality make this one of the most impressive cigar ashes I have encountered at Klaro. It's a pity that when I sampled this smoke I was taking my evening post-dinner night walk and therefore was unable to capture a photo of this ashy monstrosity.

🦀Flavors are just as mysterious as the blend itself. While some sweet rum raisin and creamy café au lait notes could be found at times, deeper tastes of chicory, toasted cedar, and a faint fermented funkiness kept me guessing.

🦀This smoke is definitely box-worthy, just note that it comes in boxes of 50 cigars. So if you have the extra coin (and humidor space) and are looking for something medium and dark, but not too heavy or powerful in a fun little vitola, this makes for an outstanding splurge.

Tobacco Nerd Note: It's highly likely that West Tampa's master blender, "Chef" Rick Rodriguez, has left the origin of the wrapper, binder, and filler of this devilish treat a secret for a reason. This is the gent who always says that judging a cigar by its tobacco strains will never get you anywhere. Smoke first. Ask questions later. So just dive in, and take this smoke for what it is. And that is a rich, relatively dark treat for those looking for loads of flavor and a medium-full smoking session.
